peta:鬼,為輪回流轉中的苦界、惡趣之一。
許多民族的先民皆認為人死後會變成鬼,古印度人也不例外。因此,巴利語“peta”(梵preta)一詞也作為(pa-ī,先前的,離開的)的過去分詞,有亡者、死者、祖靈等意思,並引申為“鬼”。如《中部註》從詞源學的角度解釋說:“死後到達的地方為鬼界。”(Peccabhāvaṃ pattānaṃ visayoti pettivisayo.) (M.A.1.153)
然而,根據業果法則,並非人死後皆投生為鬼,只有所造作的不善業成熟才可能投生為鬼。
鬼的種類很多,果報的差別也很大,包括擁有福報、快樂的大力鬼(mahiddhika peta)、時苦時樂的天宮鬼(vimānapeta),以及醜陋、饑渴的餓鬼等等。不過,由於這一類眾生大多數都經常遭受饑餓、口渴及痛苦的折磨,所以被籠統地稱為“餓鬼”。
在《彌林達問》中提到有四類餓鬼:食吐餓鬼(vantāsika)、饑渴餓鬼(khuppipāsina)、燒渴餓鬼(nijjhāmataṇhika)和依他施活命鬼(paradattūpajīvina)。其中,只有第四種依他施活命鬼才能獲得人們以他們的名義布施的食物和回向的功德。
猶如畜生類一般,鬼類與人同住在一個世間,例如山林、荒野、村落、墳場等。
