Concise Pali-English Dictionary by A.P. Buddhadatta Mahathera
a-:pref. ① (表示否定) 無,非,不. akusala [a-kusala] 若是接在母音前,則用 an → anattan [an-attan] ② ā- 但若在重子音(雙子音)前,則用 a- → akkosati [ā-kosati] ③ aor. 和 cond. 則在動詞前面放置 a → akāsi,abhavissa.
パーリ語辞典 水野弘元著
a-:pref. ① 否定を示す. 無,非,不. akusala [a-kusala] 母音の前では anとなる. anattan [an-attan] ② ā- が重子音の前で a- となる. akkosati [ā-kosati] ③ aor. や cond. では動詞の前に a を置く. akāsi,abhavissa.
《巴漢詞典》Mahāñāṇo Bhikkhu編著
A-,前綴 ā 在雙子音之前的短化。例子:ā + kosati = akkosati; 名詞、形容詞和分詞的否定前綴。例子:na + kusala = akusala; 一些過去式和條件語氣的詞素的增加前綴。例子:akāsi.(p1)
a-,【字首】作為過去式(past tense)的字首擴增。如︰語基 paca = to cook煮,(So) apaci,paci他已煮了。
A-,3(Vedic a-),【字首】擴增(augment)加在過去式(preterite,aorist)、條件式(conditional tenses),在散文(prose)中通常省略。a-當做某些代名詞的語基,如:-ato,-attha,-asu etc.
A-,2 (An- 加在母音之前) (吠陀語(Vedic) a-,an-;印歐語(Idg.= Indo-Germanic) * n̊,gradation form to *ne (see na2); 希臘文(Gr.)
例子:akāsi(造作了)。

A-,3 [Vedic a-; Idg. *e (Loc. of pron. stem,cp. ayaṁ; orig. a deictic adv. with specific reference to the past,cp. Sk sma); Gr. e)--; also in Gr. e)keί,Lat. equidem, enim] the augment (sign of action in the past),prefixed to the root in pret.,aor. & cond. tenses; often omitted in ordinary prose. See forms under each verb; cp. also ajja. Identical with this a- is the a- which functions as base of some pron. forms like ato attha asu etc. (q. v.). (Page 1)

A-,2 (an- before vowels) [Vedic a-,an-; Idg. * n̊,gradation form to *ne (see na2); Gr. a),a)n-; Lat. *en-,in-; Goth.,Ohg. & Ags. un-; Oir. an-,in-] neg. part. prefixed to (1) nouns and adjectives; (2) verbal forms, used like (1),whether part.,ger.,grd. or inf.; (3) finite verbal forms. In compn. with words having originally two initial cons. the latter reappear in their assimilated form (e. g. appaṭicchavin). In meaning it equals na- nir- and vi-. Often we find it opp. to sa-. Verbal negatives which occur in specific verb. function will be enumd. separately, while examples of neg. form. of (1) & (2) are given under their positive form unless the neg. involves a distinctly new concept,or if its form is likely to lead to confusion or misunderstanding. -- Concerning the combining & contrasting (orig. neg.) --a- (â) in redupl. formations like bhavâ-bhava see ā4. A-,1 the prep. ā shortened before double cons.,as akkosati (ā + kruś akkhāti (ā + khyā abbahati (ā + bṛh. -- Best to be classed here is the a- we call expletive. It represents a reduction of ā- (mostly before liquids and nasals and with single consonant instead of double). Thus anantaka (for ā-nantaka = nantaka) Vv.807amajjapa (for ā-majjapa = majjapa) J.VI,328; amāpaya (for āmāpaya = māpaya) J.VI,518; apassato (= passantassa) J.VI,552. (Page 1)
